How Does Periodontal Disease Affect on Overall Health?

The healthcare industry is expanding far and wide. There are very few health problems for which complete solutions are not still obtained. But, the improvement in techniques and the equipments being used has contributed highly in the obtained solutions and those that are being studied to cure diseases. Dental healthcare is an important part of the industry and focuses mainly on issues related to the oral health of an individual. There have been many studies that have been carried out to find a relation in between the oral health and other health issues in a human being.

It is found that a bad oral health can have adverse effects on the other important organs in our body. A periodontal disease can have adverse effects on health and can give rise to problems such as heart diseases, diabetes and respiratory diseases. If one is pregnant and has a periodontal disease, there is a high risk of her delivering a premature low weight baby. Let us take a look at the way this disease can affect the health of a healthy individual.

1.      Periodontal Disease and Heart Disease

Recent research and studies have come up with an observation that normal activities like brushing and chewing may cause some bacteria in the mouth to get swallowed and thus enter the blood stream of an individual. These bacteria later attach themselves to the fatty acids and cling to the coronary arteries. This later increases the risk of a high intensity heart disease. If you are suffering with a periodontal disease, you be at double risk of suffering with a heart disease. Although there is no proper evidence to prove this, many dentists have been advising their patients to be careful.

2.      Periodontal Disease and Diabetes

It is a well known fact that Diabetes and Periodontal diseases are interrelated. Patients suffering with diabetes are highly susceptible to infections and thus have a high risk of suffering with periodontal diseases. This disease in turn reduces the insulin producing capacity and thus hinders the blood sugar levels. It is thus important for every diabetic patient to go for a regular dental check up.

3.      Periodontal Disease and the Respiratory Tract Diseases

Various studies and researches have proved that there are a variety of respiratory tract diseases such as Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Emphysema and many more that can be caused due to a bad oral health. This is usually found in people who are in their older age. It is thus important to make sure that elderly people go in for a regular dental check up.

Periodontal diseases adding to the risk of obtaining these major health problems have made people more aware of the necessity of going in for a regular dental check up. A number of people in Little Rock, Arkansas have been found taking this very seriously and make it a point to visit the dentist regularly.
